The loss of a tooth can have a real impact on a person’s smile and appearance; it can also have an adverse impact on a person’s dental health in the future. However, advances in implant dentistry techniques means a person with missing teeth can once again have a full smile, and safeguard the health of their remaining teeth.

Some reasons for replacing missing teeth include:

Aged appearance – A smile that is missing teeth is aesthetically less appealing; teeth also provide support to other areas of the mouth and face, such as the cheeks. When teeth are lost, the cheeks can begin to cave, making a person appear drawn and look older than they really are.

Dietary changes – Missing teeth can lead to dietary changes as some foods become more difficult to consume. This is due to the lack of support between teeth as a result of a missing tooth, leading to tooth shift and malformed bites. Taste sensations can also be affected as a result.

The loss of a tooth can have a real impact on a person’s smile and appearance; it can also have an adverse impact on a person’s dental health in the future.

Dental health – When a tooth is lost, the stimulus the tooth provides to the jawbone tissue is also lost. Over time, the jawbone begins to deteriorate and shrink, and can affect the mass of bone that surrounds other teeth in the same way, leading to tooth loss. This in turn can have an adverse effect on a person’s appearance as a person’s facial features can alter as a result.

However, using dental implants to replace missing teeth can prevent jawbone deterioration from occurring. This treatment involves an implant dentist placing a small titanium rod directly into the patient’s gum tissue, where it will fuse with the jawbone.

This process of fusion, known as osseointegration, provides strength and stimulus back into the mouth, helping to maintain the structure of the mouth, and also the health of the jawbone tissue.

The dentist then places a porcelain dental crown atop the titanium pillar to complete the dental implant treatment. The crown can be shaped and shaded to provide a perfect finish to the appearance of the implant.

Once complete, the treatment allows the patient to resume normal speech, which can also be altered by missing teeth, as well as being able to enjoy their favorite foods. As the dental implant is a permanent fixture, it doesn’t require to be removed from the mouth for cleaning, and can be cared for in the same fashion as normal teeth.
