An alternative to traditional braces, Invisalign provides patients with the ability to experience excellent results without the discomfort and self-consciousness that often occurs with metal braces. Because the aligners used for Invisalign are practically invisible, as well as removable, many adults prefer this approach to orthodontics.
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign uses a series of specially molded plastic aligners to adjust the position of misaligned teeth. The aligners are worn for a week or two, then the next aligner in the sequence is substituted. The number of aligners used for an individual treatment differs based on the severity of the misalignment as well as other individual factors.
Aligners are removable, and can be taken out for meals, cleaning or infrequently for special occasions, but for best results they should remain in the mouth for at least 22 hours every day.
To begin Invisalign treatment, the dentist takes detailed molds of the teeth. From these molds, he makes three-dimensional digital images of how the teeth should look after successful treatment. As well as making a model of the final desired alignment, he also makes a series of models that represent incremental changes in the position of the teeth throughout the treatment. These models are used to make the aligner trays, each of which works to move the teeth a small amount at a time.
The first aligner in the sequence will cause a slight shift in the position of the teeth. As the aligner is worn every day, the teeth gradually move into the desired position. After the teeth have reached this first goal, the next aligner is placed, and so on until the final aligner brings the teeth into the final desired position.
